Tooth pain or swelling

Do you have a tooth that has been waking you up at night?  Hurting for a week and then stopping?  Causing your face to appear swollen?  Have difficulty biting on one side or one area of your mouth due to pain?

If you’re experiencing persistent pain in the area surrounding a single tooth, you may need a root canal—one of the scariest phrases a dentist can utter. Despite the negative association people have with root canals, however, they’re actually one of the best ways to relieve pain and swelling inside the mouth caused by cavities and bacteria. Without effective treatment, loss of the tooth is likely, as tooth decay reaching the pulp tissue inside the tooth causes infection.

Our dental care providers at Eagle Point Family Dentistry will save your tooth by gently removing damaged tissue and nerves, then carefully cleaning and sealing it to protect it from bacteria. In most cases, root canals are no more uncomfortable than getting a filling— and we offer comfort options that can put you in a calm, relaxed state while performing this simple procedure.

Call Eagle Point Family Dentistry today at 541-826-0599 and ask us how we can make this and other procedures more comfortable for you!

Things to do before root canals

Upcoming root canal appointments can make you feel an impending sense of doom.  People ask you what you're planning on this week and all you can think is "root canal, ugh."  Usually a root canal is performed to get you out of pain or to prevent pain but people still have fears and concerns about the pain of the actual procedure itself.  If that describes how you feel, relax, take a breath and read on.  Here are a few ideas to make your upcoming appointment as easy as possible.

  1. Get Plenty of Rest: More often than not the patient is more nervous than they should be. With technological advancement in the execution of root canals the stereotypes are just that, stereotypes. A sleepless night before your procedure will just lead to more anxiety and irritability.

  2. Take an over the counter pain medication: A simple 200mg ibuprofen (Advil) or 500mg acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help ease the soreness and discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. The pain following a root canal usually only merits an over the counter remedy. It’s not as painful as they say!

  3. Eat Something: You will be in the dentist chair for a period of time. After your procedure your mouth may be numb and you are encouraged to only eat on one side of your mouth. It is better to have a meal before to counteract the nausea that can accompany anesthesia as well as avoid eating while your mouth is numb.

  4. Relax!: Root canals are one of the most notoriously feared procedures but for no particular reason. Especially with all the advancements being made in the field the last thing you should be worrying about is pain. The procedure is meant to relieve the pain you have already been feeling in your affected tooth. So take a deep breath and look forward to feeling much better in the long run.

With any procedure whether it is elective or not a consultation is recommended to make you feel at ease and understand what will take place. Make sure you feel informed and trust your physician.
