TMJ/TMD

Do you suffer from persistent jaw pain, tension headaches, or worn teeth? If so, you may be suffering from TMD (also referred to as TMJ), a potentially painful structural jaw disorder that can usually be treated successfully at Eagle Point Family Dentistry to lessen or suppress discomfort and pain.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder (TMJ/TMD) is a fairly common problem in that it affects 20 to 30 percent of the adult population, mostly between the ages of 20 and 40. It is more common in females, and although headaches can be caused by a number of different complications, tension headaches are a primary symptom of TMD. While they aren’t life threatening, up to 90 percent of the population suffers from tension headaches—and they can be debilitating.

These tension headaches, if caused by TMJ, stem from the jaw joint, surrounding muscles of the jaw, and the jaw itself. Typically a stress reaction, clenching or grinding of teeth (commonly occurring while sleeping) is the primary culprit of TMD. Our dentists will administer a series of tests to determine the cause of your headaches or TMD, and develop a personalized approach to treat your specific condition.
